Project 4: Simple DIY Wrap!

I adore those loose-fitting jersey knit wraps.  So, when I saw this project on Pinterest, I just HAD to try it out!  Check out the original post here at Behind the Seams.

Here are the materials it said you will need:
1. 60 inches of your choice of fabric (I chose a brown jersey knit)
2. Scissors
3. Measuring tape / Yardstick

Here's what to do:

1. Hold the fabric horizontally.  Fold it in half.

2.  Measure 6 inches down from the top and 6 inches in from the fold.  *Note: I decided to change this to 8 inches each, just in case the holes were too close together.

3. Cut an 8-inch vertical slit in the fabric.

4.  When you open the fabric, you will have two arm holes.

Well, apparently I'm Oompa Loopma sized, because when I tried on my DIY wrap it dragged the ground.  I looked like a Jedi!  So I cut half of the length off the bottom.  So much better...

Plus, with the leftover fabric, I can tie a knot in the ends and wear it as an infinity scarf!  Win-win!

Again, very fun and simple project to do with friends!  Next project, three t-shirt scarves!

Project 3: Garland-wrapped Letter

Every December, I hang up the same old wreath on my front door.  It's beautiful and all, but this year I wanted to do something a little different.  I found this great idea on Pinterest to buy one of those large paper mache letters from a craft store and wrap it in strand garland.  Apparently, the address has been discontinued, but the blog was called "Flourish Frugally".

So here's what you need:

1. A paper mache letter from a craft store (I got mine from JoAnn's).

2. 2 strands of garland

3. Your choice of other floral embellishment (I chose cranberries)

4. A staple gun.

How to make it:

1. Start at the bottom of the letter and staple the end of the garland to the letter.  You may have to try this a few times, since paper mache is, well, just paper.

2. Begin wrapping the garland around the letter.  Every few inches, add another staple to make sure it all holds.  While wrapping the garland, "floof" out the garland to make sure it's covering the paper mache.

3. Once the letter is totally wrapped with garland, begin pulling apart the floral embellishment into smaller sections. 

4. Slide the floral stems under the wrapped garland wherever you think they look good.  They should stay, but you can staple these into the paper mache if you would like.

5. Here is your final product!

All in all, this was a simple and fun project.  I'm so excited to hang my garland-wrapped letter on my door for Christmas this year!

Project two: Red Tipped Nails

After Mer rolled my hair into sock buns, we continued to look through my pinned potential Pinterest projects.  I have lots of fun nail paint pictures, many of which are far too complicated for my feeble little brain to handle.  However, Meredith is the beauty mastermind of our communal family.  She found one that she wanted to try out.  It was a fall tree limb that stretched across all of the fingernails.  My obsession with trees and love of pampering told me, "Sure! Go for it!"  Unfortunately, here's what happened:

My 1st project: No Heat Waves with Sock Buns

There are so many things that I have "pinned" that I want to try out.  I decided that the first thing I'd do is create no-heat wavy hair using sock buns.  Here is the site that I pinned: How To Use A Sock To Get Beautiful Curly Hair Without Heat.  Great explanation of how to make and use the sock buns.  Visit and try!

Well, I have extremely thick hair, so we - my bestie and practically-sister, Meredith and I - decided that I would need to split my hair into two pieces and create two buns.  Mer helped me roll the socks onto my hair.  And by helped, I mean did it for me.  Here is the result!

We didn't have to hold the buns with pins or anything; they were very snug and secure!  So anyway, according to the blog that I pinned, all I had to do was sleep with these awesome Princess Leia-esque buns and unroll it the next morning. 

After a slightly restless sleep - partly due to the buns, partly due to a pinched nerve in my neck, and partly due to the sheer excitement of how adorable I would look in the morning! - I awoke and unrolled the buns.  And VOILA!

 

Looks great, I know!  The only thing I had to do was unroll, comb through a bit with my fingers, and clip in a barrette!  Next time, though, I am going to use a small amount of mousse, just for longer hold.  All in all, the sock buns worked exponetially better than I had thought they would!

My Pinterest projects!

So, as a lemming, I like to follow the crowd a bit.  And the crowd screamed, "Pinterest!"  And now I'm quite obsessed.  I found so many things to "pin" and many of them are not merely funny quips, thought provoking photos, or other hilarity...many are things you must try. Needless to say my "I can do that" folder is filling up and I hadn't even tried one thing. This blog is my attempt to force myself into trying some of these DIY's. Be prepared, I am pretty brave and will try just about anything that won't break the bank or burn my house down (well, I could burn my house down on any given day just making dinner, so we'll see). Follow me as I attempt some of the things I've "pinned" and provide you, the reader/follower with the confidence to also "pin"....or not.
